in the ocean levels made the damage worse when hurricane sandy hit the east coast and took so much away from us. the big question is the future, of course, and a new kind of normal for all of those living along the water. it is where we begin tonight, our chief environmental affairs correspondent, anne thompson has more on what we learned. >> reporter: well, the information comes from a group of international scientists, brian and shows we're living climate changes in real time. this july was the warmest month on record. and tonight, there is new information that reveals just how fast the world's ice sheets are melting. the numbers are staggering. 344 billion metric tons of ice melting in antarctica and greenland a year. the weight of more than a million empire state buildings, the information was published in the journal, from researchers who looked at the data gathered over the last 20 years. creating what they say is the most accurate picture of melting. in antarctica, the east region is gaining ice, but it is not enough to make up for the loss on the rest of the continent. in greenland, it

of great stories for you. yesterday in sandy-stricken new jersey and new york, a secret santa was handing out $100 bills. the anonymous missouri man sought out people who had been devastated by hurricane sandy. and while he plans to hand out $100,000 in total, he says it's not about the money. it's about committing random acts of kindness. >>> speaking of random acts, this new york city police officer did something incredibly kind for a homeless veteran in need. and he did it when he thought no one else was looking. >> reporter: it was a moment of kindness captured in a photograph. an nypd officer helping an apparently homeless man. >> it was freezing. and the first thing i thought was, this is absolutely unacceptable. so i went up to him, and i was, like, where are your socks or your shoes or anything? >> reporter: the officer says he was so moved by what he saw, he went into this store to find the man a pair of shoes. >> it's kind of hard not to be inspired. again, it was a regular night. it was pretty busy, business as usual, but again, this officer kind of took the time, saw something

and blames superstorm sandy and five below, the name says it all. everything in the store $5 or less. and posted a profit this time around and is that 8? yeah. ultra salon cosmetics, strong profits, rich women buying makeup. up it goes. whole foods, one of my favorite stocks, whole food stores, upscale grocery store paying them a special dividend this year. this calendar year of course, and what may be a big tax increase on dividends next year. what will their liberal customers think of that? the stock is up. and pharmaceuticals, same thing, one time dividend, two bucks a share and this is only a-- this is a $6 stock. and he's paying $2 a share and so it's up $10% and sea gait makes computer hard drives and mixing the regular dividend by 6 cents a share and another dividend play before the end of the year, stock is up. dow industrials, flat as we suggested. we're up 8 points. we've been calling it a tax revolt and whole foods the latest to join in and billions in corporate profits paid to investors before the new year to avoid what may be higher taxes next year. more on that coming u

for a long time. recently exposed in the storm, sandy, where we lost one of our substations because we didn't make the investment. we as a nation, as a region didn't make the investment to make sure that the water did not come into that substation and in the ability for us to have a level of service into penn station in new york city, because those gates were so old. it was scheduled to get done as a part of the program and it is now scheduled to be done as part of the gateway program which is a discussion that this body needs to have for the future about how do we make those investments in infrastructure? i am hearing that today in many areas. so, really a subsidize cost is really about the long-distance trains where the business model doesn't work the same as the level of service along the northeast corridor and the need to connect that service. but we have to be careful coming into reorganizing amtrak. we had to find out whether it was the gao report or whether it was the ig report. we followed the ig structure in terms of developing a strategic plan. there's no question about that and i
